State ABLE Program

The Adult Basic and Literacy Education Unit of the Ohio Board of Regents provides quality leadership for the establishment, improvement and expansion of lifelong learning opportunities for adults in their family, community and work roles.

The State of Ohio has worked diligently to establish a clear and accessible pathway for adults who want to advance their education and career.  Stackable Certificates were designed as the first step on that pathway, directing adult students towards certificates and/or degrees.  ABLE programs in Ohio are playing a key role in delivering the Stackable Certificates by preparing students academically for a successful transition into postsecondary education.

The Stackable Certificates program offers Basic and Advanced certificates, both of which are considered pre-college level. Students earning a Basic and/or Advanced Certificate would be required to master an 8.9 or 12.9 grade level equivalency, respectively, in reading, writing and math. ABLE instructors will utilize a minimum of two progress assessments in order to award Basic and/or Advanced Certificates.

With a State goal of increasing the number of adults entering postsecondary, the ability of adults to successfully transition to postsecondary education and careers has become even more crucial. ABLE will continue to play a vital role in bridging the education gap for students entering postsecondary education/job training and the workforce.
